What Is 2048?
2048 is one of the most popular puzzle games ever created. Originally released in 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, it became an instant viral hit and has been played billions of times worldwide.
The game is played on a 4×4 grid filled with numbered tiles. You slide tiles in four directions (up, down, left, right), and when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their combined value:
- •2 + 2 = 4
- •4 + 4 = 8
- •8 + 8 = 16
- •... all the way up to 2048 and beyond!
After each move, a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) appears in a random empty spot. The game ends when the grid is completely full and no more merges are possible.
The goal? Create a tile with the number 2048. But don't stop there — you can keep going to reach 4096, 8192, or even higher.

- 4Score goes up — each merge adds the new tile's value to your score

Quick Strategy Tips
The Corner Rule
Always keep your highest-value tile in one corner. Most experts use the bottom-right or bottom-left corner. This prevents your big tiles from getting stranded in the middle of the grid.
Two-Direction Dominance
Pick two directions as your primary moves (e.g., DOWN and RIGHT for bottom-right corner). Use the other two directions only when absolutely necessary.
Keep One Row Full
Keep the row or column containing your corner tile full at all times. This anchors your big tile in place and prevents it from sliding away on the next move.
Don't Chase
Focus on building a consistent chain of descending values rather than chasing specific merges. The merges will happen naturally when your tiles are well-organized.
Use Undo Wisely
Our undo feature is there for a reason — use it when you accidentally break your tile arrangement. It's much better to undo one move than to struggle for 20 moves trying to recover.

Why 2048 Remains So Popular
More than a decade after its release, 2048 is still played by millions. Here's why:
Perfect Difficulty Curve
The first few merges are trivially easy (2+2=4), but the challenge ramps up smoothly. By the time you're managing 256s and 512s, every move requires careful thought.
"One More Game" Factor
Games take just 5-10 minutes, making it perfect for breaks. And because your score is always right there taunting you, it's impossible not to think "I can beat that."
No Randomness in Strategy
While new tiles appear randomly, the merging mechanics are completely deterministic. This means your skill directly determines your outcome — there's always something to improve.
Cognitive Benefits
Playing 2048 exercises spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and strategic planning. It's a genuine brain workout disguised as casual fun.
