Play Connections Online Free: Daily Word Grouping Puzzle Game

Want to play Connections online for free? GeoGuess Connections brings you the hit word-grouping puzzle game with daily challenges and unlimited free play — all in your browser, no download needed.

What Is the Connections Game?

Connections is a word puzzle where you're shown 16 words and must sort them into 4 groups of 4. Each group shares a secret connection — a category, theme, or pattern that links those 4 words together.

The twist? The words are carefully chosen to be misleading. Many words could plausibly fit into multiple groups, and the puzzle designers plant red herrings to throw you off. You have just 4 mistakes before the game ends.

Difficulty Levels

Each puzzle contains 4 groups of increasing difficulty:

  • Yellow — the most straightforward connection (e.g., "Types of Fruit")
  • Green — requires a bit more thought (e.g., "Olympic Sports")
  • Blue — tricky, may involve less obvious categories (e.g., "Shakespeare Plays")
  • Purple — the hardest, often involves wordplay or hidden patterns (e.g., "Words that follow FIRE")

How to Play Connections: Quick Guide

1. Study the Grid

Look at all 16 words. Don't rush — spend 30 seconds scanning for obvious groupings before making any selections.

2. Select 4 Words

Tap or click the 4 words you think share a hidden connection. Selected words highlight so you can review your choice.

3. Submit Your Guess

Hit the Submit button. If you're right, the group is revealed with its category name and color. If you're wrong, you lose one of your 4 allowed mistakes.

4. Use the Tools

  • Deselect All — clear your current selection to start fresh
  • Shuffle — randomize the grid layout for a new perspective
  • Watch for the "One Away" notification — it means 3 of your 4 words are correct

5. Solve All 4 Groups

Find all 4 categories to win. If you use all 4 mistakes, the remaining groups are revealed automatically.

Example Puzzle Walkthrough

Here's how you might approach a puzzle with these 16 words:

PARIS, IRON, PENNE, TRUCK, TOKYO, GOLD, FUSILLI, PLACE, CAIRO, SILVER, RIGATONI, WORK, LIMA, COPPER, FARFALLE, FLY

Step 1: Spot the Easy Group

PARIS, TOKYO, CAIRO, LIMA — these are all capital cities. That's likely the yellow (easiest) group.

Step 2: Look for Another Pattern

IRON, GOLD, SILVER, COPPER — these are all chemical elements (and metals). That's probably green.

Step 3: What About the Food?

PENNE, FUSILLI, RIGATONI, FARFALLE — all Italian pasta shapes. Likely the blue group.

Step 4: The Remaining Words

TRUCK, PLACE, WORK, FLY — what do they share? They can all follow the word "FIRE": firetruck, fireplace, firework, firefly. That's the purple group!

Types of Categories You'll Encounter

Understanding the types of categories helps you solve puzzles faster:

Direct Categories

Simple groupings based on what things are:

  • Dog Breeds: POODLE, BEAGLE, BOXER, COLLIE
  • Continents: AFRICA, EUROPE, ASIA, ANTARCTICA
  • Flowers: ROSE, TULIP, DAISY, LILY

"___Word" or "Word___" Patterns

Words that combine with a common word:

  • ___ Stone: KEY, MILE, LIME, SAND
  • Words before "BREAK": DAY, JAW, HEART, GROUND
  • Words after "SNOW": BALL, FLAKE, BOARD, FALL

Themed Categories

Groupings around a specific theme:

  • Famous Scientists: NEWTON, DARWIN, CURIE, TESLA
  • Ancient Civilizations: ROMAN, AZTEC, PERSIAN, VIKING
  • Mythical Creatures: DRAGON, PHOENIX, GRIFFIN, CENTAUR

Tricky/Abstract Categories

The hardest groups that require lateral thinking:

  • Double Letters (words with ZZ): BUZZ, JAZZ, FIZZ, FUZZ
  • Famous Paintings (one word from each): STARRY, MONA, SCREAM, PEARL

Tips for Beginners

  1. 1Start with the yellow group — it's designed to be the most obvious
  2. 2Use shuffle liberally — seeing words in a new arrangement sparks new ideas
  3. 3Look for compound words — many puzzles use "words before/after X" patterns
  4. 4Don't guess blindly — each wrong guess costs a mistake; be deliberate
  5. 5When stuck, count categories — if you've identified 3 possible groups, the 4th is whatever's left
  6. 6Pay attention to "One Away" — it tells you exactly how close you are
